Tourist Visa and On Arrival in Nepal

Nepal is a very beautiful country that attracts hundreds and thousands of Tourists a every year. People from a different country visit Nepal for different purposes like trekking, tours, hiking, adventure, Meditation, etc. However, there are some important limitations and rules you must understand.

TOURIST VISA RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR NEPAL

The tourist visa of Nepal is issued by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu and Nepalese diplomatic missions abroad. This visa is designed for foreign travellers visiting Nepal for tourism, sightseeing, short visits or personal travel purposes.

Types of Visas Available from Nepalese Embassies and Consulates Before Arrival

Foreign Nationals Planning to visit Nepal may apply for the appropriate visa in advance through Nepalese Embassies or Consulates in their home country, depending on the purpose of travel. Below are the main Visa Categories issued before arrival:

  • TOURIST VISA

A tourist visa is issued to travellers visiting Nepal for holidays, sightseeing, trekking, cultural tours, yoga retreats, or short personal visits. The visa does not permit employment or income-generating activities within Nepal.

  • BUSINESS VISA

A business visa is granted to foreign investors, entrepreneurs, or representatives of foreign companies intending to conduct business activities in Nepal. Supporting documents and government recommendations are required.

  • NON-TOURIST VISA

A Non-Tourist visa is issued to individuals visiting Nepal for a specific purpose, such as Volunteering, studying, research, or working with international organizations or Non-Government Organizations, based on official approvals.

  • WORKING VISA

A working visa is provided to foreign nationals employed by a Nepalese organisation or Company. This visa requires a valid work permit and formal approval from the Department of Immigration and other concerned authorities.

  • STUDENT VISA

A student visa is issued to international student enrolled in a recognized educational institution in Nepal. Admission Confirmation and related documents are mandatory.

  • RESIDENTIAL VISA

A Residential visa may be issued to Foreign nationals eligible under Nepal's Immigration Laws, such as retirees, long-term residents, or individuals with special government approval.

Countries required to obtain a Nepal Visa Before Arrival

According to the Immigration Rules of the Government of Nepal, nationals of certain countries are not eligible for a visa on arrival. Travellers from different countries must obtain a Nepal visa in advance from the nearest Nepalese Embassy or Consulate before travelling to Nepal.

Nationals required to Apply for Visa in Advance

As per current immigration guidelines, citizens of the following countries are required to acquire a visa before arrival in Nepal.

  • Afghanistan
  • Cameroon
  • Ghana
  • Iraq
  • Liberia
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan 
  • Somalia
  • Syria
  • Zimbabwe

Note: Holders of refugee travel documents or emergency passports may also be required to obtain a visa in advance.

  • Entry without a valid pre-approved visa may result in denial of boarding or refusal of entry at Nepal’s Border points.

On Arrival Visa Fee at Entry Points

15 Days - $ 30 USD

30 Days - $ 50 USD

90 Days - $ 125 USD

Visa Extension Fee

  • Tourist visa extension is done for Minimum 15 Days with USD $45 and $3 per Days for additional days.
  • In the case of delay of less than 150 Days additional USD $ 5 per Day as Late fine.

Gratis Visa (Visa for Free)

Gratis Visa is issued free of cost in case of the following categories of visa Applicants:

  • Children below 10 Years of age.
  • Citizens of SAARC member countries (Subject to Government rules and Limitations)
  • Certain diplomatic, official, or social passport holders (as Applicable)

Countries with Entry Visa Exemption under Reciprocal Visa Waiver Agreements

According to reciprocal visa waiver agreements between the Government of Nepal and corresponding foreign governments, official passport holders from the following countries do not require an entry visa to enter Nepal for the given term.

  • Thailand – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • Russian Federation – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • People’s Republic of China – Visa exemption up to 30 days
  • Federal Republic of Brazil – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • Myanmar – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • Vietnam – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • Cambodia – Visa exemption up to 30 days
  • Mongolia – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • Jordan – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • State of Israel – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • Georgia – Visa exemption up to 90 days
  • State of Qatar – Visa exemption up to 90 days

Important Official Notice

  • This exemption applies only to eligible official/diplomatic passport holders, as per bilateral agreements
  • Duration of stay is subject to approval by the Nepal Immigration Authorities
  • Visa exemption does not permit employment or paid activities
  • Immigration rules may change without prior notice

Visas of all kinds, including ‘Gratis’, issued at the Airport are Tourist Visas. Contact Department of Immigration for extending your visa or changing the category of your visa. Tourist Visa extension can be done from Immigration Office, Pokhara too. Non tourist visa extension can be done only at the Department of Immigration (if eligible) for a period of maximum one year (except business visa).
