After an hours drive by car to Sundarijal we begin out trek. In four to five hours on the trail we arrive at the Shivapuri Wildlife Protected Area. The first 3 to 4 hours is tough going and uphill, but then drops for the last hour or two before coming to Chisapani where we can sit and enjoy the sunset over the mountains and valley.
The trek today is of about five to six hours and is predominantly uphill. Today we have our first views of several mountain ranges such as Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung and Dorjelakpa. The trail then descends to Pati Bhanjyang then climbs for about two hours before descending to the Tamang village of Gulbhyang. One and a half hours later we come to Kutumsang where we stay overnight.
After following the ridge we then head through a forest to Magen Goth from where we have amazing views of Langtang and Gosainkunda before arriving at Tharepati (3490m). The trek along the ridge is said to be one of the best in Nepal. The trails to Gosainkunda branch off in a north-west direction from Therapati.
Heading in an easterly direction we descend down to a ravine through the small Sherpa village of Malemchigaon (2530m) with its lovely lodges and Gompas. Once again we descend and cross a bridge over the Malenchi Khola (river) at 1890m and then head to Tarke Gyang at 2620m – the largest village in the Helambu district.
The trail slowly descends through a forest to Sermathang (2620m), the centre of an important apple growing area from where you will have awesome views of the Himalayan mountains.
Leaving Sermanthang the trail descends to Dubhachaur at 1500m, and then again we have a steep decline to Melamchi (830m) where it meets the road. This village has a good array of tea-houses and lodges. It is from here we take a bus to Panchkhal on the Kodari road. From Panchkhal we take a bus to Kathmandu (4-5 hours).
